It's 3 days before I have to return to UCLA for my second quarter, and (surprise) I don't want to. The pros of being in college:
- weekly parties
- excellent food
- classes designed such that occasional attendance ensures cognitive dysfunction
- a system that rewards risk-avoidance and conformity
- veneration of status, age, and qualifications over skill and competence
- résumé whoring so intense that it's illegal everywhere except Nevada
The problem with the educational system is that people's actions are largely motivated by a desire to tell others that they've done them. Screw that. Anything that's meaningful will be meaningful whether or not others know about it.
