4-rotor (quadcopter, quadrotor) drones are what first interested me in electronics when I was in middle school. This particular drone was several years in the making; the first iteration suffered a catastrophic speed controller failure before its maiden flight and never left the ground. I figured out the details after two years and detours into learning C++, soldering, and PCB design. The craft achieved level flight in 2014, and died a fiery death in 2015.
